Take a Photo With Your Webcam

Snap a picture from your webcam in the browser, with a self-timer and full-size PNG or JPG downloads. No app, no account, and nothing leaves your device.

Take a photo with your webcam

Turn the camera on, frame yourself and press the shutter. You can set a timer and choose PNG or JPG.

Photos stay in this tab until you download them. Nothing is uploaded.

A webcam photo booth in your browser

Turn the camera on, frame yourself and press Take photo, or press the Space bar. With the timer set, a countdown gives you time to sit back and smile. Each shot appears under the preview, where you can download or delete it, and you can take as many as you like.

Photos are saved at the size your camera sends, up to Full HD (1920 × 1080), not as a shrunken copy of the preview. Use them for a profile picture at work, a photo for a club or gym card, or a quick snap to send someone. For a moving picture, switch to the webcam recorder.

How to take a photo with your webcam

  1. Turn on the camera

Press Turn on camera and allow access. On a phone the front camera opens; choose another from the Camera list if you like.

  2. Choose timer, format and mirror

Set Timer to Off, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. Pick JPG for small files or PNG for no compression. Leave Mirror on to save the photo the way the preview looks.

  3. Take and download

Press Take photo or Space; if the timer is on, a countdown runs first and Esc cancels it. The photo appears under Your photos with a download button, and photos you don’t download vanish when you close the tab.

Mirror on or off?

The preview is mirrored, like looking in a glass, because that’s easier to pose with. With Mirror on, the photo is saved exactly as the preview looks. Turn it off to save the camera’s true view, which is how other people see you and the only way writing on a sign or T-shirt reads the right way round.

PNG or JPG?

Choosing a photo format
Format Best for File size at 1080p
JPG Sharing, email and profile picturesSmall, usually a few hundred KB
PNG Editing and cropping with no quality lossLarger, often a few MB

Both formats keep the full frame from the camera. JPG is the safer choice for uploading somewhere with a size limit.

Tips for a better webcam photo

  • Face a window or lamp so the light falls on your face, not behind you.
  • Raise the camera to eye level: a few books under a laptop avoid the looking-up-your-nose angle.
  • Wipe the lens. Laptop cameras collect fingerprints that soften the whole picture.
  • Use the 5 or 10-second timer to sit back and get your shoulders in the frame.
  • Glance at the background for anything you’d rather not share before you download.

Want a quick look first without taking anything? The online mirror has brightness, zoom and a screen light for checking your hair and lighting.

Where do the photos go?

Nowhere until you download them. Each photo is kept in this browser tab’s memory. Downloading saves it to your usual Downloads folder, or to Files on an iPhone. Close the tab and any photos you didn’t download are gone. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

Webcam photo questions

How do I take a picture with my webcam?

Open this page, press Turn on camera and allow access, then press Take photo or the Space bar. The photo appears below the camera with a download button.

Can I take a webcam photo on Windows or Mac without installing anything?

Yes. This page works in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, with the same timer and PNG or JPG choice on every computer.

Why is my webcam photo mirrored?

Mirror is on by default so the photo matches the mirrored preview. Turn Mirror off before taking the photo to save the true, unflipped view.

What resolution are the photos?

The size your camera sends, up to 1920 × 1080 (Full HD). Many laptop webcams send 1280 × 720. The webcam resolution test shows which sizes your camera supports.

Can I use a self-timer?

Yes. Set Timer to 3, 5 or 10 seconds before pressing Take photo. A large countdown shows on the preview, and pressing the button again or Esc cancels it.

Are my webcam photos uploaded?

No. Photos stay in this tab until you download them and disappear when you close it. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I use my phone’s back camera?

Yes. After allowing access, choose it from the Camera list. Phone browsers list the front and back cameras, and some list each back lens separately.
