A free webcam recorder that runs in your browser

recorder.video turns any built-in or USB camera into a webcam video recorder. Allow camera and microphone access and the preview starts straight away. Press Record and the video is saved in your browser as you go; then trim it and download an MP4. There’s no app to install, no account and no watermark, and the recording never leaves your device.

Use it for video messages, job applications, class assignments, vlogs and team updates: anything where you talk to the camera. Want your screen in the shot too? The same tool records both, so you can switch to the online screen recorder layout at any time.

How to record webcam video online

  1. Allow camera and microphone

Open recorder.video and allow camera and microphone access. With no screen shared, your camera fills the frame. You can also choose Camera under Layout.

  2. Set up your shot

Pick your camera and mic, turn on background blur in the camera menu, choose a size such as 16:9, square or 9:16, and open the Prompter if you’re reading a script.

  3. Record, trim and download

Press Record (or R). After a 3, 2, 1 countdown you’re recording; pause with P. Stop, drag the trim handles, and download MP4, WebM or a GIF.

Record video from your webcam with background blur

Open the camera menu and set Background to Blur. recorder.video uses your camera’s built-in blur when the camera or operating system offers one. Otherwise it runs a person-segmentation model locally in your browser. The model is served from this site and runs on your device, so your video is never sent anywhere to be processed. Blur is applied before recording, so it’s part of the video you download.

The Background button in the toolbar is separate: it sets what sits around your video frame, such as a solid color, a gradient or your own image, with adjustable padding and rounded corners.

Read a script with the built-in teleprompter

Click Prompter to float your script over the preview. It can start scrolling automatically when you start recording, and you can set the speed, text size, font, margins and mirroring. Move the eyeline marker to keep your eyes close to the lens, or pop the prompter out into its own window. An optional edge light makes your screen border glow like a ring light, with an adjustable color temperature.

The teleprompter only appears on your screen. It isn’t drawn into the recording.

Sizes for YouTube, TikTok and Instagram

Use Size to record in landscape 16:9, square 1:1, portrait 4:5 or tall 9:16, or pick a preset for YouTube, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram or LinkedIn. In Settings, quality goes from 720p to 1080p or your camera’s native resolution up to 4K (the default), at 30 or 60 fps.

Mirror camera is on by default so the preview feels like a mirror, and the recording is mirrored too. If there’s text behind you that needs to read the right way round, turn it off in Settings.

Private, with no time limit

While you record, the video is written to your browser’s storage in small chunks. If the tab or browser crashes, the scene is recovered the next time you open the site. Nothing is uploaded. The tool doesn’t cap recording length; the practical limit is the disk space your browser lets this site use, which you can check in Settings.

Recording questions

How do I record a video from my webcam?

Open recorder.video, allow camera and microphone access, and press Record (or R). Your camera fills the frame when no screen is shared. Press Stop when you’re done, then download the scene as MP4 or WebM from its menu.

Is this webcam recorder really free?

Yes. There’s no account, no watermark and no time limit set by the tool. Recording happens in your browser, so there are no server costs to pass on.

Can I blur my background while recording?

Yes. Open the camera menu and set Background to Blur. It uses your camera’s built-in blur when available, otherwise a segmentation model that runs on your device. The blur is baked into the recording.

Does it work with an external USB webcam?

Yes. Any camera your browser can see appears in the camera menu, so you can switch between a laptop camera and a USB webcam. The same goes for USB and Bluetooth microphones in the mic menu.

Why is my webcam video mirrored?

Mirror camera is on by default because a mirrored preview feels natural, and the recording matches the preview. Turn off Mirror camera in Settings before recording if you want the unmirrored view.

What format are webcam recordings saved in?

MP4 when your browser can record it (recent Chrome, Edge and Safari), otherwise WebM. You can force MP4 or WebM in Settings, download audio only, or make a GIF of up to 20 seconds.

Can I record my webcam on a phone?

Yes. Mobile browsers let websites use the camera and microphone, so you can record yourself on a phone or tablet. They don’t allow screen capture, so screen recording needs a desktop browser.

Can I record my webcam and screen at the same time?

Yes. Click Screen to add a screen, window or tab, and your camera becomes a movable bubble. You can also place them side by side or stacked.

Can I add captions to my webcam video?

Yes. Captions are transcribed on your device by an AI speech model, so your audio never leaves your computer. You can edit them, download an .srt or .vtt file, or burn them into the video. The model (about 75 MB) downloads once, the first time you use it. Like any automatic transcript, it can make mistakes with noisy audio, so check it before you share.
