What is the shortcut to screen record on a Chromebook?
Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows to open Screen capture, then select Screen record (the video camera icon). You can also open it from Quick Settings by selecting the time.
Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows, select Screen record (the video camera icon), choose full screen, part of the screen or a window, and start recording. Or record with your webcam and audio right here in Chrome.
Start a new scene from one source or combine screen and camera.
Chromebooks have a screen recorder built into ChromeOS, called Screen capture. It records the full screen, part of it or a single window, can add your microphone and a camera overlay, and saves the video to your Downloads folder. This guide walks through it, explains how to record with audio, and covers a browser recorder for when you want more control.
Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows (the key with a rectangle and two lines). Or select the time at the bottom right to open Quick Settings, then select Screen capture.
In the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, select Screen record, the video camera icon.
Select the Settings gear to turn on the microphone, turn on the camera overlay if you want your face in the video, and choose where recordings are saved.
Pick full screen, partial or window. Click to record the full screen, drag an area and select Record, or click a window. A short countdown runs first.
Select the red stop button on the shelf at the bottom right. A notification appears, and the video is saved in the Downloads folder in the Files app.
Open the Settings gear in the Screen capture toolbar before you start and turn on the microphone to record your voice. Newer versions of ChromeOS can also record system audio here, the sound your Chromebook plays. If you don’t see that option, update ChromeOS or use the browser method below.
In recorder.video, ChromeOS supports system audio from the whole screen. Click Screen, choose your entire screen and turn on system audio in the picker, or share a single tab with its audio. Your microphone is recorded at the same time, with noise suppression.
recorder.video is a website, so it works on any up-to-date Chromebook in Chrome with no extension, Play Store app or account. It adds what the built-in tool lacks: pause and resume, a webcam bubble you can move or place side by side, a pen to draw on the recording, a teleprompter, trimming, and MP4 downloads that play almost anywhere. Recordings stay on your Chromebook and aren’t uploaded.
Just need your face on camera? The webcam recorder works the same way without sharing your screen.
Open the Settings gear in Screen capture and make sure the microphone (or system audio, where offered) is on before you start. In the browser, turn on audio in the share picker; a window can’t be shared with its audio, so share the entire screen or a tab instead.
School and work Chromebooks are managed, and administrators can turn off screen capture. The same policy can block screen sharing in the browser too. If it’s disabled, ask your school or IT team.
Copy-protected video, which includes many streaming services, records as black. That’s the protection working, not a fault with the recorder.
In Downloads in the Files app, unless you chose another folder in the Screen capture settings. Built-in recordings are WebM videos. recorder.video keeps recordings in your browser until you download them, and downloads also go to Downloads.
| Option | Install | Audio | Webcam | File |

For a quick clip, the built-in Screen capture tool is all you need. For a lesson, demo or assignment where you want pause, drawing, trimming or an MP4 file, use the browser recorder. Screen recorder extensions also work, but they need permission to run in your browser, and some free plans add watermarks or time limits.
Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows to open Screen capture, then select Screen record (the video camera icon). You can also open it from Quick Settings by selecting the time.
Use Screen capture or a browser recorder, as on any Chromebook. If screen capture is missing or blocked, your school’s administrator has turned it off, and only they can change that.
Yes. Screen capture can show a camera overlay; turn it on in the Settings gear. recorder.video records your screen and webcam as a movable bubble, side by side or stacked.
The built-in recorder saves WebM videos. recorder.video downloads MP4 in Chrome, which is easier to upload and edit elsewhere, and can also export WebM, audio only or a short GIF.
Newer versions of ChromeOS offer system audio in the Screen capture settings. recorder.video can also record your entire screen with system audio on ChromeOS, or a single tab with its sound.
No. Screen capture is built into ChromeOS, and recorder.video runs in Chrome with no extension, app or account.
