The story behind recorder.video
Recording your screen should be as easy as opening a web page. Yet the usual options mean installing software, creating an account, accepting a watermark or hitting a time limit just as the demo gets interesting. recorder.video is a screen, webcam and microphone recorder that lives entirely in the browser tab and asks for none of that.
What's inside
- Capture: the browser's own screen-sharing and camera APIs, so you choose exactly which screen, window or tab is recorded.
- Crash-safe storage: each take is written to your browser's storage in small pieces while you record, so a crash or reload doesn't lose it.
- Editing: takes are captured with the browser's MediaRecorder, then trimmed and converted on your machine with WebCodecs and the open-source mediabunny library. Export MP4, WebM, audio only or a short GIF.
- Presenter extras: background blur powered by MediaPipe's selfie segmentation model (served from this site), a drawing pen, size presets for YouTube, Shorts and TikTok, and optional on-device captions using the open-source Whisper speech model.
Who it is for
Teachers recording lessons, developers filing bug reports, support teams making how-to clips, students handing in assignments on a Chromebook and anyone who needs to show rather than tell. Step-by-step guides cover recording on Mac, Windows and Chromebook, plus webcam-only and audio-only recording.
